The Biomethane National Technology Platform has predicted that by 2030 in Italy biomethane production could reach 8.5 billion cubic meters, of which 0.5 from waste and the rest from agriculture. This value is very high and is about 13% of the national demand. At the same time, 12,000 new jobs are proposed in the field of waste treatment, landfill management and the cycle of agro-industrial plants.
This gas, once converted into LNG, increases its potential and with a doubled energy density, its storage and transport is simpler and more profitable.
In addition, its use ranges from electricity to fuel production for road and seaborne transport.

Anaerobic digestion plants aimed at the production of biogas is good for the environment.
A study commissioned by the “CIB” has shown that the land on which is carried out the spreading of digestate get greater biodiversity and increase their fertility.
In Italy, in recent years, the number of biogas plants has increased considerably (+ 177% between 2010 and 2013) and, today, the installed capacity is 1,339 MWe. 16% of renewable energy is produced from bioenergy, while the plant investment in this renewable energy was € 4.2 billion between 2010 and 2014.
The world of agriculture has a leading role, in fact, the increase of biogas plants in agricultural companies was 586% higher between 2010 and 2014.

The National Technology Platform on Biomethane is launching a series of measures to increase productivity of the sector by 2030.
Italy is one of the most productive markets in the agricultural and livestock biogas: it is second in Europe after Germany and third in the world after China. This field offers positive scenarios: by 2020, it expects revenue of 3.2 billion euro net of incentives. The new National Technological Platform on Biomethane connects industry, transport, agriculture, utilities and environmental associations. It aims to make Italy one of the leading producers of fuel.
Regarding the production of biomethane in Italy, the Platform provides a programmatic manifesto with actions aimed at strengthening and development of the field, in order to produce 8.5 billion cubic meters by 2030. The measures are:
1. Review the time period for access to incentives;
2. Provide by 2030 an annual minimum target of biomethane feed-in of at least 10% of the natural gas injected in the same period;
3. Provide an accounting system that enhances the ability of farms and biogas plants to sequester the CO2 in the atmosphere;
4. Set up a registry of biomethane Guarantees of Origin to develop an active trading market that bring out the value between biomethane and avoid carbon emissions;
5. Change the regulation of the CIC market (certificates of release for consumption).
